This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workdays. The NC Department of Environmental Quality trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.

The Chemist I position is responsible for providing technically and legally defensible quantitative analysis of environmental samples (e.g. drinking water, surface water, ground water, rain water, animal waste lagoons, wastewater, soil, sediment, sludge, tissue) for metals parameters including aluminum, antimony, barium, beryllium, boron, calcium, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, lithium, magnesium, manganese, mercury, nickel, potassium selenium, silver, strontium, thallium, tin, titanium, vanadium, and zinc. The results of these analyses are utilized to protect human health, protect the environment and meet federal and state monitoring requirements prescribed by the United Sates Congress, NC General Assembly, and the NC Environmental Management Commission.

Key
Responsibilities:

Recognize and correct instrumental problems that may affect the quality of data being acquired.
Full knowledge of atomic spectroscopy theory and technical application.
Serve as a resource of information to the Unit when troubleshooting instrumental problems and maintain the instruments at peak performance.
Coordinate the Quality Assurance/Quality Control program for the Metals Unit including IDOC and MDL development, maintenance and reporting.
Write Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) for review and approval by the unit supervisor.
The Division of Water Resources:

The Division of Water Resources is responsible for protecting North Carolina's drinking, surface and groundwater for all waterbodies including lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and aquifers. This environmental stewardship is accomplished through actions including permitting issuance, investigations, regulatory compliance and enforcement, monitoring and field assessments, certifications, laboratory analysis and testing, planning, water quality standards management, educational outreach and other efforts. The Division comprises six Sections:

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

Documented experience with the principles, concepts, theories, reference sources, or laboratory applications of chemistry and/or other related sciences.
Documented experience with scientific methodology and/or laboratory safety practices.
Demonstrated experience to independently perform or record laboratory tests or procedures.

Bachelor's degree in chemistry from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of progressive chemistry laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and directly related experience. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
