Senior Principal Standards Architect

We are seeking an experienced, respected industry professional who understands and can operate effectively within the world of standardization, to join the Strategic Industry Standards team.
A proven ability to develop trusting relationships and build consensus with our competitors and customers, while remaining within the operational framework of our corporate code of conduct and the rules of the bodies within which we operate will be vitally important in this role.
The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with the ability to clearly and concisely articulate complex subjects and concepts with engineers, technical experts and senior marketing or sales executives.
Fluent written and spoken English competency is essential.
The successful candidate will ideally be a visionary strategist who can quickly grasp concepts, implications, and the steps to success, when in some cases the concepts may be incomplete.
Internally the successful candidate will serve as a strategic advisor and partner to our product management, engineering and business development teams and will be comfortable interacting with the business at all levels.
They will create business-driven standards strategies for this technology segment and tactically execute to benefit Itron's commercial interests and the success of its customers.
Present updates, recommendations, and direction to various sectors of Itron's business including product roadmap owners.
Externally the person selected for this role will be expected to represent Itron as well as the smart devices industry.
Provide advice, guidance, and direction in the interests of successful product launches, as well as potential threats to current and legacy products.
Be an ambassador for Itron technology, products and values in standards bodies and industry events always acting with the upmost integrity.
Job Duties &
Responsibilities:
Liaise with sales, business development, engineering and product management organizations throughout Itron's Devices, Networks, and Outcomes business units.
Suggests technical concepts, alternative approaches, and anticipates and identifies technical problems.
Formulates input to vision/strategy of market direction, product concepts, and other major objectives.
Participation, contribution and leadership in Standards Development Organizations and industry consortia meetings.
Working knowledge of standards essential patents and disclosures in the context of Standards Development/Setting Organizations.
Can identify potential patent applications and/or implications.
Working knowledge understanding of the legal imperatives relating to IPR protection, anti-trust, anti-bribery, corporate governance will be a distinct advantage.
Expected to publish technical papers, act as an Industry liaison, and attend outside conferences.
Strategic planning:
assess market opportunities based on technological considerations for current and new products.
Responsible for staying updated, through continuous learning, on new trends, technologies, and management practices and distributing such information to others within Itron.
Evaluates market opportunities in area of competence and proposes solutions.
Works with product managers and business leaders to coordinate projects as a direct contributor or in an advisory capacity.
Work requires analytical, interpretive, evaluative and/or constructive judgment.
Contribute to product development teams in assessing new product specifications and act in an advisory capacity in the area of standards, certifications, compatibility and interoperability.
Understands business objectives linked to the development and application of technology.
Complies with applicable company policies, including Personnel, Quality System and Health, Safety and Environment standards and procedures.
Travel 25% to 50% globally Education:
Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience.
Experience with application layer protocols such as DLMS/COSEM, LwM2M/IPSO smart objects, data modelling and the principles of common transport layer protocols will be essential.
Working knowledge of web-based APIs, firmware architecture and software design are also desirable.
This expert will have industry experience and connections in the standards world.
Direct participation in application layer protocols standards development organizations and standards setting consortia at National, regional, and international level such as IEC, CEN, CENELEC, DLMS User Association etc.
The candidate will be an expert at developing trust relationships and consensus building with our competitors and customers, while remaining within the operational framework of our corporate code of conduct and the rules of the bodies within which we operate.
